Production Manager

Naval Ship Management (NSM) is a Joint Venture between Babcock and UGL. NSM is a key Alliance Partner in the Warship Asset Management Agreement that provides asset management and sustainment for the ANZAC Class vessels for the Royal Australian Navy.

NSM currently has an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified and experienced Production Manager to join the Naval Ship Management (NSM) based in Rockingham, Western Australia.

The Production Manager is responsible for planning, managing and controlling assigned project or projects and site production activities to ensure timely performance, compliance with customer requirements, contractual obligation and maximum efficiency in the use of Company resources.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Work independently to organise and prioritise demands, handle multiple complex tasks simultaneously, set and meet deadlines and follow-through within a fast-paced environment with multiple and competing demands;

  • Prepare and update the project risk register;

  • Prepare and present weekly progress reports;

  • Build and maintain relationships with our clients and subcontractors to ensure that NSM is positioned as the “Contractor of Choice” for Project Management.

  • Lead site meetings with senior stakeholder management to discuss progress of project, safety and the environment and other project issues;

  • Liaise with subcontractors for resolution of technical production matters as required;

  • Lead progress meetings, safety meetings and contractor meetings as required. Provides advice where necessary;

  • Manages and directs site personnel on the project;

  • Ensures all production work is carried out to the approved drawings and specifications and that correct work practices are engaged at all times;

  • Ensures efficient scheduling, planning and labour resource management;

  • Review project master schedule to optimise manning levels and timely completion of contract works;

  • Review subcontractors progress payment claims, as required, evaluate subcontractors’ variation claims and estimates for emergent works;

  • Implement and maintain a continuous improvement program for site production activities. Contribute to a “Safety First” culture through demonstrating “felt leadership” and participation in HSE initiatives Lead the Project team by example in safe work practices to deliver a Zero Harm work environment. Empower the team to speak out and stop work when they witness or feel something is not right;

  • Maintain strict budget controls seeking “value for money” options, whilst maintaining “best for Practice” work standards and ensuring that quality and schedule are not compromised

Team Leadership:

  • Provide leadership and direction to all team members (direct & indirect), so that all employees are engaged with the business; understand and adopt NSM’s values, strategy and plans; and are motivated to achieve their objectives and improve the business

  • Establish clear communication within the team by creating and maintaining a culture of openness, communication that is responsive, and honest, with and from all members of the team, providing innovation and organisational agility

  • Coach and mentor all direct reports on all aspects of their role;

  • Address poor performance and inappropriate behaviour in a timely manner, taking action where required within guidelines of policies and procedures;

  • Maintain a focus on the development of our people, identify resourcing gaps, and actively participate in the recruitment process as required to meet business needs;

  • Ensure that all direct reports have a career development plan, clear and documented objectives aligned to the strategic objectives of the company, which are formally assessed on a 6-monthly basis;

  • Ensure succession plans are in place for all key roles that are direct reports


The ideal candidate will have the following core skills

  • Extensive experience in a large marine engineering or construction project environment

  • Contract Administration experience

  • Project Management Systems experience

  • Proven background building and retaining a highly energised team

  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and maintain morale of team members

  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, Project, and Outlook

  • Strong commitment to developing and maintaining a safe working environment

  • Degree, Diploma or Cert III in Project Management, Engineering or a relevant Trade or relevant trades experience

  • Current Motor Vehicle Driver’s Licence (desirable)

  • Must either hold, or be eligible to obtain an Australian Defence Security Clearance
