About the Role

Job Purpose

The Engineering Manager is the main interface with the client’s Principal Engineer and is responsible for effectively conducting the activities required of them to meet the requirements of the contract. The Engineering Manager is a participant within the Authorised Engineering Organisation as defined within the Defence Seaworthiness Management System (DSwMS) and supports the Principal Engineer in the planning, management and delivery of their accountabilities

Key responsibilities are as follows:

  • Leading and developing the engineering team and creating a culture of engagement within the environment.

  • Responsibility for the quality, safety and timeliness of engineering services;

  • Develop, deliver, and update all Engineering Management Plans, systems and reporting mechanisms in accordance with the requirements of internal and external stakeholders

  • Exercise the engineering delegation provided by the client;

  • Ensure that all Engineering Services provided by Subcontractors and Associated Parties are provided in accordance with documented requirements;

  • Ensure that Subcontractors and Associated Parties develop, update and implement appropriate technical plans as appropriate;

  • Convene with the client Representative and Ship’s Technical Representative for quarterly Engineering Support Reviews as required.

  • Participate in the Authorised Engineering Organisation within the Authorised Materiel Seaworthiness Delivery Organisation.

  • Assist the Asset Class Principal Engineer in the planning, management and delivery of their accountabilities including:

    • Controlling the Class mission and support system design through all phases of the life cycle to achieve the desired operational effect, using the inherent design performance and reliability features, within the approved Certification Basis, and operating within the approved Operating and Support Intent (OSI)

    • Identifying and eliminating SFARP technical risks associated with the assets;

    • Minimising the number of engineering changes;

    • Conducting technical analysis and investigations;

    • Analysing change requests;

    • Conducting developmental activities for

    • Developing Technical Instructions;

    • conducting engineering process improvement, system safety engineering, supportability and logistics engineering analyses, conducting System Reviews

    • Provision of engineering and technical advice;

    • Conducting Material, Software or Equipment Trials.


About You

This role will align with an experienced Engineering Manager or Lead Engineer that has high level experience in large scale projects involving multi-disciplinary engineering teams and engineering execution within the Defence sector. You will be degree qualified in an associated discipline and preferable have CPEng or Chartered Engineering Technologist status and will possess excellent interpersonal and analytical skills. Additionally you will be a confident team player that has a passion for identifying and driving improvement activities and enjoys working within a team environment but can also work autonomously as required. You will have exceptional time management and organisational experience coupled with an ability to prioritise, plan and organise your work load and timeframes with a strong attention to detail. The successful candidate will have high level computer skills and have a proven ability to adapt and learn new systems and processes quickly. Familiarity or previous experience with the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and/or the Capability, Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG) would be advantageous.


The successful candidate must hold or be eligible to obtain an Australian Defence Security Clearance
